ENERGY – Electricity production increases by 3.4 MW

The electricity production of the Antananarivo Interconnected Grid (RIA) has gained an additional capacity of 3.4 megawatts (MW). Two new generator sets installed in Ambohimanambola, as part of the Malagasy Power (MADO) project, were officially inaugurated on October 30. This new installation comes in a context marked by declining water resources, which affects the production capacity of hydroelectric plants. It is intended to help support the power supply for the capital and its surrounding areas.

The equipment consists of two generator sets with a unit capacity of 1.7 MW, totaling 3.4 MW. This thermal production complements existing electricity sources for the RIA, providing a necessary boost as water availability poses a challenge for hydroelectric facilities during drought periods.

This capacity reinforcement is part of an initiative launched in March 2026 by the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons and Jirama. The MADO group, through Malagasy Power, responded to the call to address the country’s energy needs. While this addition contributes to available production, it does not guarantee the end of power outages, as service continuity also depends on the distribution network’s condition and operational factors.

The project highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in energy development. With Madagascar aiming for 80% electricity access by 2030, increasing production remains a critical step toward achieving this national goal.
