With one year to go before the 12th edition of the Indian Ocean Island Games (JIOI), scheduled to take place in the Comoros from August 10 to 19, 2027, the Mauritian government has officially launched its preparations. According to the Mauritian press, a total budget of 20 million Mauritian rupees, approximately 425,000 US dollars, has been allocated by the Ministry of Sports to support the preparation of Mauritian athletes.
The announcement was made by Deven Nagalingum, the Mauritian Minister of Sports, during his visit to the first gathering of athletes pre-selected for the Games, held this Saturday at the Vacoas gymnasium. This funding is intended for the purchase of sports gear and equipment. A total of 581 Mauritian athletes across 18 disciplines have been called up for this initial assembly.
The ministry stated its commitment to ensuring the best possible conditions for the Mauritian delegation, particularly regarding logistics and accommodation in the Comoros. The minister expressed his hope that the country would “perform well” and manage to “finish at the top of the rankings, just as we did in 2019.” During the Island Games held in Madagascar in 2023, Mauritius finished second behind the host nation, securing 91 gold medals compared to 121 for Madagascar.
