The Institut français de Madagascar (IFM) brings together the works of Edouard Rajaona and Richianny Ratovo in an exhibition that confronts artistic heritage with contemporary creation.
Painting connects two generations of artists here. Presented at the Institut français de Madagascar (IFM) from September 8 to October 10, the exhibition ‘Passerelle’ (Footbridge) juxtaposes the works of Edouard Rajaona and Richianny Ratovo, curated by Hemerson Andrianetrazafy. It is part of the IFM’s annual theme, ‘Of Memory and Future’.
Edouard Rajaona, who passed away earlier this year, dedicated nearly fifty years to art. A prominent figure in Malagasy painting and a master of impressionism, he was particularly noted for his landscapes and scenes of rural life. Also a sculptor, he worked with rosewood and granite. In 2024, he celebrated his fifty-year career at the Alliance française in Antananarivo.
Richianny Ratovo represents a more recent generation of Malagasy creation. A multidisciplinary visual artist, she won the Paritana Prize in 2021, followed by the gold medal in painting at the Francophone Games in 2023. In 2025, she represented Madagascar at the 36th São Paulo Biennale.
The interest of ‘Passerelle’ lies precisely in the encounter of their universes. According to Hemerson Andrianetrazafy, Edouard Rajaona developed a more structured body of work, while Richianny Ratovo explores a multifaceted visual language. Two paths and two sensibilities thus coexist around painting, in a dialogue between memory and the future.
