INFRASTRUCTURE – Construction of the first 20 kilometers of the road to the future Sahofika dam is on track

Construction work on the access road to the future Sahofika hydroelectric project is progressing well, two months after its launch. According to the Ministry of Public Works (MTP), teams are currently focused on the first 20-kilometer section connecting Ilempona to the Belanitra bridge in the Antanifotsy district, Vakinankaratra region. The project, entrusted to Colas Madagascar, involves the development of a 62.7 km road designed to serve the site of the future hydroelectric dam.

For the first 20 kilometers, the work includes earthworks, the construction of infrastructure reinforcement structures, and the preparation of foundations necessary for the continuation of the project. According to the ministry, the installation of the crusher, equipment intended to produce road construction materials, was completed this week. Key production equipment, including the concrete batching plant, asphalt plant, maintenance workshop, and prefabrication area, are also operational to ensure the site’s autonomy. The ministry indicates that the work is subject to technical monitoring to ensure compliance with quality standards.

This road under construction is expected to facilitate the transport of materials necessary for the construction of the future Sahofika hydroelectric plant. However, the ministry believes it is also intended to improve traffic conditions and support the economic development of the localities it passes through. Launched on June 2, 2026, the project is scheduled to be completed in June 2027.

The Sahofika project is among the structural energy projects aimed at increasing Madagascar’s electricity production capacity. According to the Resettlement Plan published by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2020, associated infrastructure includes the rehabilitation of the Belanitra–Antanifotsy road, the construction of the link between Belanitra and the dam, as well as the link connecting the dam to the future power plant. An electrical line between the plant, Antanifotsy, and Antananarivo is also planned.
