HYGIENE – Households gain access to water

Access to drinking water is accelerating for private individuals. Thousands of households will be connected to the network by September. Jirama has relaunched the regularization of files for households that had already completed all administrative and financial formalities but whose connection remained blocked due to a shortage of water meters.

This operation, which began in September 2025, has finalized 4,293 connections so far, according to the Drinking Water Access Improvement Project (PAAEP). The connection campaign continues until September to process the 3,395 pending connections.

The national company relies on the PAAEP, a program funded by the World Bank to the tune of 400 million USD, under the supervision of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (MEAH), to carry out this work. The project aims to sustainably improve access to drinking water for more than one million people in Greater Antananarivo and several secondary cities in Madagascar. It operates through several complementary actions, including the replacement of aging meters, in addition to the regularization of pending connections. The vast meter replacement campaign is also underway. Between September 2025 and June 2026, no fewer than 10,268 aging water meters have already been replaced. However, the operation is far from over, as there are still 19,732 obsolete meters to be renewed.
