3×3 Basketball: The Ankoay in a Group of Giants

The Madagascar U23 women’s Ankoay team is preparing for its first World Cup in Wuhan, China. They will face Spain, Latvia, Uganda, and Tonga with the goal of advancing from a particularly challenging group.

The draw was not kind to Madagascar. For the FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup, taking place in Wuhan from September 15 to 19, the Ankoay women have been placed in Group C, where Spain and Latvia emerge as the clear favorites. Uganda and Tonga complete the group, where the Malagasy selection will have to fight hard to make their mark.

In the FIBA 3×3 women’s world rankings updated in July 2026, Madagascar holds the 53rd position. Spain and Latvia operate at a significantly higher level. Uganda and Tonga are also behind the major European nations, which suggests more balanced matchups for Madagascar against these two teams.

The four players selected for this global event are Koloina Rakotonirina, Elinah Rafarasoa, Taratra Ramahatra, and Justine Etienne Rahariarivony. Coach Eli Michael Rakotonindrina has adjusted the roster to include taller players to counter opponents who have athletes over 1.83m. The team aims for victories against Uganda and Tonga to secure third place and a spot in the quarter-final playoffs.
