FOOTBALL / AFCON 2027 QUALIFIERS – Madagascar takes third place in Group L after draw against Tanzania

Madagascar currently sits in third place in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers following a 1-1 draw against Tanzania on Tuesday in Meknes, Morocco. In the other match of the second round, Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 to take the top spot in the group with six points.

The Barea secured their first point of the qualification campaign. After falling behind to a Tanzanian goal in the 40th minute, the Malagasy team equalized shortly after the break through Nicolas Fontaine in the 51st minute. Both teams ultimately settled for a draw.

In the group’s other fixture, Guinea-Bissau widened the gap by convincingly beating Nigeria 3-0. This victory allows the Djurtus to take sole possession of the lead with six points, following their opening win against Tanzania (2-0). Nigeria, who had defeated Madagascar (2-1) on the first matchday, remains on three points.

This result places Madagascar in third position with one point, behind Guinea-Bissau (six points) and Nigeria (three points). Tanzania, having lost to Guinea-Bissau in the first round, also has one point after their draw with Madagascar.

Madagascar’s situation remains challenging but not hopeless in a group where only one qualifying spot is available, as Tanzania has already qualified as a host nation. The Great Island remains in contention with Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau for this single remaining spot in Group L. The Barea will need to defeat the Djurtus during the third and fourth matchdays, scheduled for November, to stay in the race.
