The rehabilitation of the Ampasampito bus station has become a priority for safety reasons. On-site, several infrastructures remain unfinished or underutilized, while the condition of the retaining wall has become a point of concern. The Minister of Transport and Meteorology, Herizo Ramanambola Andrianavalona, and the President of the Special Delegation of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo, Feno Ralambomanana, visited the site this Monday to assess the necessary work and accelerate the restoration of the facility.
“The lower part is relatively clear, but the retaining wall shows signs of weakness and could pose a danger to people,” warned the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology. “In the event of heavy rain, there is a risk of collapse. Some buildings also show cracks,” it cautioned.
Faced with this situation, the Ministry and the Urban Commune of Antananarivo have agreed to combine their efforts to quickly initiate rehabilitation work. The initial goal is to secure the site, but also to improve the reception and operational conditions of the station.
The Ampasampito bus station currently hosts nine transport cooperatives, some operating multiple lines. In total, 301 vehicles with operating licenses are registered there. According to data from the Land Transport Agency (ATT), the station records an average of 14,607 vehicle departures per year, or about 40 departures per day, for an annual volume of 291,235 passengers, corresponding to nearly 798 passengers daily. These figures illustrate the important role played by the station in serving localities located notably on National Road RN2, including Moramanga, Vatomandry, Mahanoro, and Ilaka Est.
In parallel with the rehabilitation work, a reflection is underway on the reorganization of lines and the increase in operational capacity. “We plan to develop both the upper and lower parts of the site. Some lines could be transferred here to strengthen those already installed,” explains the ATT. Upon completion of the work, the station is expected to accommodate up to 80 vehicle departures and 1,600 passengers per day, which is about double its current level of activity, according to the ATT.
