For a few hours, a single day, even before it began, experienced a form of dissociative identity disorder. Its status underwent multiple shapings and reshapings, ultimately reaching dizzying dimensions that plunged those meant to navigate it into confusion. These were moments where certainty faded, giving way to procrastination that clouded agendas. Even an official statement from an authority representative did not fully erase the doubt, which had to wait for the sun to rise on that specific day to partially dissipate. For ordinary citizens, mere travelers in the complex labyrinth of administration, the afternoon was lived through the painful experience of uncertainty.
Erwin Schrödinger imagined a thought experiment: a cat is locked in a box containing poison that could be released by a random quantum event. As long as the box remains closed, the cat’s life escapes all determination: it is both alive and dead. Two alternatives that overlap without excluding each other, much like what we experienced during those hours of discordance, seeing the same source attribute two different statuses to a single day. The laws of quantum mechanics are obviously not those that govern administration, but we, as simple individuals, felt as if we were living in an overlapping of realities that makes one dizzy.
Our case would have also interested Kafka. In the meanders of bureaucratic decisions, truth can easily slip out of our reach and fade behind opacity. In the novel ‘The Castle’, we see how, despite the profusion of official messages, the administration continues to convey uncertainty. Faced with an excess of information, the citizen no longer knows which to trust. And our era, the cult of speed, has increased the velocity of information, which is more likely to fall into instability after a frantic race. Words, the instruments used to understand one another, struggle to fulfill this primordial function.
During that grueling afternoon, words circulated in abundance without ever being able to enlighten us, reminding us of Ionesco’s plays where they eventually end up emptied of their meaning. This episode thus highlighted the importance of consistency and stability in discourse, so that we no longer have to wait for the compass, which seemed to hesitate, to find north again.
