A predicted shortage. Jirama, the state-owned utility company, has reported an electricity production deficit of approximately 29 megawatts (MW) on the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA). This gap is currently disrupting electricity distribution in the capital and its surrounding areas.
This situation stems from two technical issues occurring almost simultaneously. The first involves a technical incident at the Combustion Turbine (TAC) in Ambohimanambola, which immediately reduced the available production capacity. The Ambohimanambola TAC had only recently been restarted, just a month ago, to bolster supply for the capital.
The second factor is the critical drop in water levels at the Andekaleka dam, the main hydroelectric plant supplying the capital. According to Jirama, the water level has reached its minimum alert threshold of 357.7 meters, forcing technicians to immediately shut down two production units to protect the infrastructure from damage.
Faced with these technical and hydrological constraints, Jirama has assured its customers that its technical teams are fully mobilized to manage the situation and are working to regulate the distribution of remaining electricity while awaiting repairs.
Jirama has not provided a specific timeline for a return to normal, as the restoration of service depends on both the repairs at Ambohimanambola and the evolution of water levels at Andekaleka, which remains subject to hydrological conditions.
