Communities are becoming increasingly involved in the protection and management of forests. Through the Tany Meva Foundation’s community projects, 20,000 hectares of forest have been placed under sustainable management via natural resource management transfers (TGRN). Additionally, these efforts have enabled the conservation or management of 1,000,000 hectares of land and over 200,000 hectares of marine areas. Furthermore, more than 10,000 hectares of forest land have been reforested or restored. This is the outcome of the Tany Meva Foundation’s 30 years of commitment, presented during the official launch of its 30th-anniversary celebration, themed “30 years serving biodiversity through communities,” held at the Novotel Alarobia on June 17.
“Celebrating our 30 years is, above all, a tribute to the grassroots communities, partners, and donors who believe, as we do, that a green and prosperous Madagascar is possible. Tany Meva has successfully navigated challenges to transform visions into measurable impacts on the ground,” announced Hariliva Rasoanarivo, Executive Director of the Tany Meva Foundation, during the event.
Concrete Responses: The Tany Meva Foundation’s mission is to mobilize and manage financial resources aimed at funding local initiatives for the protection and sustainable management of natural resources. The foundation consistently places communities at the heart of its funding activities. By financing and supporting projects led by local communities, it has proven that the protection of Madagascar’s unique biodiversity is inseparable from the economic and social well-being of local populations. The foundation has invested over 20 million USD in grants for environmental projects led by communities. Nearly 1,850 local projects have been supported across Madagascar, directly benefiting over 415,000 households. “In a global context marked by climate challenges, loss of biodiversity, and increasing pressure on natural resources, the Tany Meva Foundation intends to continue its commitment alongside public actors, technical and financial partners, civil society, and local communities to build concrete and sustainable responses,” according to the Executive Director.
