It was 2020, but who remembers? Yet, as early as 2017, Douglas Murray, a journalist for The Sunday Times, wrote in ‘The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam’: by the middle of this century, it is more than likely that China will still look like China, India like India… But, at the rate it is changing, Europe will no longer be able to resemble what it was just a few decades ago. Even longer ago, in 1973, Alain Peyrefitte launched his famous ‘When China Wakes… (the world will tremble).’ Today, it is for this Europe, which we love for what it once was, that the world trembles.
Lesbos, as well as Samos, Chios, Leros, Kos… these are all Greek islands facing Turkey, which has decided to invade Europe in its own way. On the island of Lesbos, the Moria camp was opened in 2015; 13,000 migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, and Africa are crammed into facilities designed for 4,000 people.
Greek firefighters reported several fires, including inside the camp, where access had initially been blocked by the migrants. They have understood the trick: martyrdom, compassion, the sesame.
A former French (socialist) minister tweeted: ‘Europe, wake up; without a fair distribution of these refugees and humane protection, there is no salvation.’ An Oxfam official demanded ‘that people be welcomed and relocated among member states,’ and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees asked the (conservative) Greek government to transfer asylum seekers to the mainland.
The ‘natives’ of Lesbos, whose existence we were about to forget, refuse the construction of new migrant camps on their island. The mainland Greeks, already in a precarious economic situation themselves, voted for a conservative government precisely to spare them the burden of these millions of foreigners: racially foreign, culturally foreign, religiously foreign.
Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Croatia have clearly said no to hosting migrants. German and French leaders, without knowing what the Germans or French themselves think, say they are ready to accept an additional quota of migrants. What is the threshold of tolerance for real integration, to avoid the formation of community ghettos immediately infiltrated by Islamist fundamentalists, and to avoid the dilution to the point of disappearance of the host society itself?
The Mediterranean ‘Mare Nostrum’ is the sea where the very idea of Europe is going to drown. What was stopped at Poitiers (732) and Vienna (1529) has taken the face of millions of refugees, driven out precisely by the Islamic State: Daesh, certainly a friend who wishes you well, Europe.
