Students are more attentive and retain information better, according to teachers from the six school districts of the Atsimo Andrefana region, who gathered at a pedagogical fair organized by the Regional Directorate of National Education (Dren) and UNICEF in Toliara.
Aurélia Razanakoto, a teacher at the EPP Belaza school in Ampanihy, showcased a handmade model of the four seasons. By using tactile elements like cotton for winter and leaves for autumn, she encourages students to observe and discuss before explaining the curriculum. Similarly, Raissa Justine from EPP Ankililoaka emphasizes that semi-concrete, handcrafted materials that students can touch and move significantly improve memory retention.
The fair features a wide array of creative tools, from homemade thermometers and compasses to rag dolls for family studies and anatomical models. Loria Biscottine, director of the Regional Center for Pedagogical Training (CRFP) in Belemboka, highlighted the event as a showcase of teachers’ creativity and a vital step toward improving education quality. Statistics remain a concern, with only 8.8% of students in the region proficient in reading and basic calculations.
The event continues with debates on education quality, awards for the best teaching materials, and oratorical and poetry competitions in Malagasy, French, and English.
