ENVIRONMENT – Drought strikes the Menabe region

The Menabe region is facing several environmental challenges, as the effects of climate change are beginning to take their toll. “The population is suffering, and water resources are depleting. Along the RN35 and RN34 national roads, the situation is striking: the rivers are completely dry,” stated Nolave Luck Aristide Andriatsihala, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. The remarks were made during the opening of the celebrations for World Environment Day, International Day for Biological Diversity, and the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, held on June 28 and 29 in Morondava.

Morondava is also suffering from the silting up of the Betania River. “The Betania River, which allows boat access to the port of Morondava, is experiencing severe silting caused by the accumulation of sand and alluvium coming from the Dabaraha River,” the Minister added.

The degradation of the Menabe Antimena protected area is leading to serious environmental crises, primarily drought. The region hosted these three events to raise awareness and mobilize the local population to actively participate in environmental protection, biodiversity preservation, and the fight against drought and water scarcity.

To mark the event, several key actions were carried out. A large carnival paraded through the streets of Morondava to sensitize residents to the conservation of nature and natural resources. Additionally, a major beach cleanup was organized to contribute actively to the protection of marine biodiversity.
