CRIMINAL NETWORK – Police thwart human trafficking ring targeting young women for China

A human trafficking network was dismantled in Antananarivo following the interception at Ivato airport of a young woman destined for a forced marriage in China. Four suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention.

The police thwarted the trafficking operation late last week. After thorough questioning, it was established that the young woman was to be sent to China, with a significant sum of money promised to her for marrying a Chinese national. Three women and one man are involved in the case and are currently in custody.

The victim was intercepted at Ivato by the Border and Airspace Protection Police. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the section specializing in special investigations, fraud, and human trafficking.

“The investigation revealed that the girl was to marry a Chinese man, with a promise of 10 million ariary upon her arrival in China following the wedding. The network was identified, and the four suspects were arrested while preparing the departure of another woman. Five fake stamps, numerous documents, and ten Malagasy passports were seized,” the National Police stated.

The dismantled network appears to be well-established, as it is believed several women have already been sent to China. The network’s earnings are estimated at 100 million ariary per woman. Some victims, after being deceived and trapped in marriages with Chinese nationals, reportedly suffered abuse.
