New traffic regulations are being implemented in Mahamasina. Traffic on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue has been converted to two-way flow on the section between the Mahamasina Technical and Vocational High School (LTP) and the Sainte-Famille School. This measure was taken due to the closure of road sections in Mahamasina as part of the wastewater pipeline rehabilitation project, under the Integrated Sanitation Program of Antananarivo (PIAA2), led by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
This modification provides an alternative for motorists. Drivers coming from Ampahibe and heading to Tsimbazaza no longer need to detour through Anosy. They can directly take the route passing in front of the Saint-Joseph Catholic Church in Mahamasina, Gastronomie Pizza, and Tometal to reach Ankadilàlana. The road section in front of the Antanimbarinandriana General Education College (CEG) has been reduced to a single lane. Vehicles coming from Gerb’Or or Ankadilàlana can also use this route to head towards Tometal and Sainte-Famille.
“A roundabout has been installed at Ankadilàlana to ease traffic in this area, especially with the start of the school year. Please be very careful on this road and keep to the right, as it is now a two-way street,” stated Michel Olivier Randrianarivony, head of mission at Inframad, a Malagasy infrastructure engineering and consulting firm, during the traffic simulation on Saturday.
This new traffic plan is temporary. The Urban Commune of Antananarivo warns that further road closures and disruptions are to be expected as the pipeline replacement work progresses.
