Strengthened cooperation between China and Egypt. The two countries signed several agreements and announced new areas of cooperation during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Egypt on September 1-2, 2026.
One of the key commitments involves launching the third phase of the Egypt-China industrial zone, which already hosts 200 companies and represents approximately four billion dollars in investments, according to Egyptian authorities. Financial details for this new phase were not disclosed.
The two nations also plan to expand cooperation in technology, particularly in data centers and cloud computing. The joint statement released following the visit also mentions artificial intelligence, digital transformation, semiconductors, cybersecurity, space applications, and remote sensing.
Cooperation is set to extend to local production. Beijing and Cairo aim to explore partnerships in electric vehicles, shipbuilding, and renewable energy equipment, such as solar panels and wind turbine towers. Seawater desalination, agriculture, automotive manufacturing, and critical mineral supply chains were also identified as key sectors.
Financially, the two presidents welcomed the renewal and increase of the currency swap agreement between China and Egypt. They also intend to promote the use of local currencies in trade and investment.
Both parties agreed to seek a better trade balance and facilitate greater access for Egyptian products to the Chinese market, continuing consultations on a potential ‘Early Harvest’ agreement.
This economic cooperation aligns Egypt’s ‘Vision 2030’ with China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. Both countries aim to strengthen Egypt’s role as a regional hub for industry, logistics, clean energy, and the digital economy between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The economic aspect of the visit comes against a backdrop of already significant trade relations, with China recording a 12-billion-dollar trade surplus with Egypt in the first seven months of 2026, according to Chinese customs.
Beyond economic agreements, Beijing and Cairo reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership, particularly in infrastructure, transport, energy, security, and tourism. The two governments will now ensure follow-up on these commitments, notably through an upcoming meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission.
As Xi Jinping’s first visit to Egypt in a decade, this trip coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The joint statement highlights that in 1956, Egypt was the first Arab and African state to recognize the People’s Republic of China. The two countries have since developed a comprehensive strategic partnership, established in 2014.
The visit takes place in a regional context marked by renewed hostilities in the Middle East and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. In Cairo, discussions also covered the regional situation, with both presidents reaffirming their commitment to political and security coordination and support for regional and international peace, stability, and development.
Regarding security, China and Egypt agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating transnational organized crime and terrorism, and to accelerate consultations toward signing an extradition treaty.
A meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission is expected to be held as soon as possible to implement the commitments made. Xi Jinping, accompanied by Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids, invited his counterpart to visit China, an invitation accepted by the Egyptian president.
