Madama the Historian: A Tribute to Professor Lucile Rabearimanana

Some individuals leave a mark on us that goes far beyond what they taught. On Saturday, at the Andafiavaratra Palace, a tribute was paid to one such person: Professor Lucile Rabearimanana.

It is no surprise that she was honored at the Prime Minister’s office, as she trained two of them. Her influence extends beyond historians; geographers, journalists, and many others have attended her classes. Her former students include ministers and officials at UNESCO, the UN, and the World Bank.

To her students, she is “Madama the Historian.” “Madama,” the Malagasy version of “Madame,” conveys both respect and affection. As one of the few women in the discipline at the time, her name is synonymous with the study of history in Madagascar. Even today, some call her “Madame Opinion Press” or “Madame 47,” reflecting her research interests.

Madama is also known for her style: designer bags, elegant suits, matching shawls, and an air of excellence. She taught her students, especially the women, to cultivate their presence and be remarkable with the distinction of true “gentlemen” and “ladies.”

This tribute took the form of a collective work titled “Madama the Historian: Homage to Lucile Rabearimanana,” featuring contributions from a dozen historians, former students, and colleagues. Unlike many tributes that come too late, this one was presented while she could still hear it.

A full member of the Malagasy Academy and a State Doctor, she specialized in contemporary history, focusing on decolonization, the history of the press, and the uprisings of 1947 and 1972. Approaching 80, she continues to teach, jokingly claiming it keeps Alzheimer’s at bay.

Beyond history, she taught lessons on life and empathy. She was also known for her deep partnership with her husband, the late Professor Gabriel Rabearimanana. While she carried his name, the reputation she built was entirely her own, forged by her kindness, intelligence, and dedication.
