The bamboo sector in Madagascar continues to face significant challenges. While external demand is strong, with exports already reaching Reunion Island, the Seychelles, and Europe, local production suffers from structural deficits. Between raw material shortages and a lack of suitable equipment, artisans struggle to meet the quantitative and qualitative requirements of the global market.
“The challenge now lies in the standardization of products and the improvement of finishing touches. Technical training has already been provided in the regions. The current action of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) aims to structure synergies between these production hubs and the capital. Standardization is therefore a necessary step to allow Malagasy craftsmanship to establish itself sustainably on the international stage,” explains Jean-Yves Razafindrakoto, president of the NGO Center Malagasy for Bamboo Resources and Technology (CMBART).
With this in mind, the Fivoarana Malagasy Association (Afima), which brings together artisans in the bamboo sector, received a batch of materials and equipment yesterday, including sewing machines, intended to perfect finished products. This donation is the result of joint support from the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) and Chinese cooperation.
