Ebola continues to circulate actively in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Central African nation has recorded over 1,000 new confirmed Ebola cases in just ten days. The toll released on Sunday by Congolese authorities reports 3,075 cases, including 1,354 deaths, since the official declaration of the epidemic on May 15, 2026. The country had crossed the threshold of 2,000 cases on July 15.
This 17th Ebola epidemic in the DRC is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Congolese authorities indicate that improved detection and confirmation of cases now allow for more precise monitoring of the epidemic’s progression.
The main epicenter of the outbreak is located in the Ituri province, in the northeast of the country, where nearly 90% of cases are concentrated, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This region, bordering South Sudan and Uganda, has also been marked by decades of armed conflict. Furthermore, strikes by personnel involved in the response have been reported in recent days at several hospitals, with staff demanding the payment of their salaries.
Experimental Vaccine: Faced with this situation, several research teams are accelerating the development of vaccines and treatments against the Bundibugyo virus. Oxford University announced that a first volunteer received an experimental vaccine specifically targeting this strain on Friday. Other vaccine candidates are under development for clinical trials, while two potential treatments are also in preparation.
The Ebola virus is transmitted through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals and causes hemorrhagic fever. In Africa, it has caused more than 15,000 deaths over the past fifty years. In the DRC, the deadliest epidemic resulted in nearly 2,300 deaths out of approximately 3,500 cases between 2018 and 2020.
