CYCLONE – Madagascar chooses ‘Pitsana’

A future tropical depression system could be named ‘Pitsana’ for the 2026/2027 cyclone season in the South-West Indian Ocean. Madagascar proposed this name, which appears in 16th position on the official list published yesterday by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The cyclone season will open with the system ‘Agueda’, a name proposed by Mozambique, followed by ‘Bertrand’, attributed by France. Eswatini provided the third name on the list: ‘Celiwe’. The fourth depression system to reach cyclone status will be named ‘Dira’, a name provided by Botswana. Subsequent cyclones could potentially be named Emmie, Fikri, Gumbo, Hisna, Isaura, Jeremy, Kanga, Ludzi, Melina, Noah, and Onias. The selection of these names follows a precise process. In the South-West Indian Ocean, the assignment of names is officially validated by the Tropical Cyclone Committee for Region I, under the aegis of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

These names will be assigned to systems that reach cyclone status starting from July 1st. While the formation of a cyclone remains technically possible at any time of the year, the period spanning from mid-November to mid-April remains the most conducive to their development.
