WEATHER – Heavy rain alerts in southern Madagascar

Météo Madagascar has placed the southern part of the country under a weather alert. Heavy rains are expected to hit these regions this week. According to the “heavy rain” alert bulletin issued yesterday by Météo Madagascar, “an intensification of precipitation is expected in the southeastern part of the island, reaching 40 to 60 mm of rain within 24 hours. Thunderstorms will also spread across the southern regions of the island by the end of the week, with cumulative rainfall estimated between 60 and 80 mm in 24 hours.”

These rains will affect the Southeast today, the Taolagnaro district on Friday and Saturday, as well as the Androy region and the districts of Benenitra, Betioky Atsimo, and Ampanihy on Saturday. “Everyone is requested to regularly follow the instructions issued by local authorities. These rains may cause disruption to daily activities, flooding in areas prone to rising water, increased river levels, landslides, and road closures in vulnerable areas,” warns Météo Madagascar.

Thunderstorms could also return to the Central Highlands, particularly in the Vakinankaratra, Amoron’i Mania, Itasy, and Matsiatra Ambony regions today. The sky is expected to be cloudy in the Analamanga region today and tomorrow.
