MUSICAL HERITAGE – Ramy Franck’s son takes up the torch

Fulfilling his father’s wish during his lifetime, the musical transmission to his son Johanne is now taking shape through several tribute projects aimed at perpetuating his repertoire.

Ramy Franck’s wish could soon become a reality. During his lifetime, the musician reportedly expressed his desire several times to see his son, Johanne, take over and continue his musical work. Today, this transition is being prepared through several tribute projects currently underway within the family and his artistic circle. As a major figure in Malagasy music, Ramy Franck left his mark on several generations with his style, timeless songs, and commitment to cultural identity.

“It’s not easy, because I am not Ramy Franck, I am his son,” Johanne confides. Aware of the legacy he has inherited, he does not seek to replace his father, but to pass on what he left behind. “I will never be the living Ramy Franck, and no one can replace him. But I am his son, so what I can do is pass on what he left us and give the best of myself to bring his songs back to life,” he asserts.

Following a family meeting, in which Olombelo Ricky also participated, it was decided to entrust the role of lead vocalist to Johanne. “After our family meeting, they decided that I would be the one to carry this music forward,” he explains.

The project is gradually taking shape around a group of six musicians. Johanne will provide lead vocals, accompanied by Deba on guitar, Ny Onja on percussion and backing vocals, Andry on drums and backing vocals, Tsiky on violin, and Ny Aina on percussion and vocals.

The goal is to keep the musical legacy of Ramy Franck alive. Several tribute projects are being considered, although their preparation still requires time. “There are several tribute projects, and we are currently in deep preparation,” Johanne specifies.

For Johanne, covering his father’s songs does not mean reproducing Ramy Franck. It is rather about preserving a musical heritage and passing it on to a new generation. The songs remain at the heart of this process, acting as a link between the late father and those who continue to carry his work. “When we sing his songs, it’s as if he continues to live through our voices,” Johanne emphasizes. With this new ensemble, the son intends to make his father’s compositions resonate once again, while embracing his own artistic identity.
