An awareness campaign on food poisoning prevention was conducted in Mahajanga. Restaurant and eatery owners, as well as caterers, were summoned to the City Hall on Wednesday by the Boeny Regional Directorate of Commerce and Consumption, the Boeny Regional Directorate of Public Health, and the Municipal Hygiene Bureau (BMH) of Mahajanga.
The meeting aimed to remind them of the rules and procedures required to ensure food quality and establishment hygiene, particularly during the hot season in Mahajanga. The BMH representative emphasized the mandatory annual renewal of the health certificate and regular medical check-ups for food-handling staff.
Harisoa Faniry Razafinimanana, the Boeny Regional Director of Commerce and Consumption, stated that professionals must hold official documents such as business licenses and statistical cards, noting that a simple municipal ticket is insufficient. Authorities will also monitor ingredient pricing.
The guidelines cover all stages from ingredient reception to storage, handling, and preparation. The Boeny Regional Directorate of Public Health stressed that food must be protected from contamination, and storage areas must be kept clean and shielded from dust, insects, and direct sunlight. Following this campaign, thorough inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance. Several cases of food poisoning were reported in Mahajanga in 2025, often linked to poor food preservation during high temperatures.
