GOLD TRAFFICKING – Prime Minister takes an uncompromising stance

The Prime Minister has vowed to dismantle gold trafficking networks following the arrest of a Chinese national at Ivato airport, who was attempting to board a flight with 2.85 kg of gold.

The arrest occurred just two days after the Head of State issued a warning against corruption. Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison has demanded that investigations be conducted thoroughly, regardless of who may be involved.

At Ivato, the Prime Minister ordered the dismantling of trafficking networks for gold and other mineral resources at airports. The Chinese national was suspected of attempting to smuggle the gold by concealing it on her body. The head of government affirmed that no leniency would be shown to those involved.

“This will continue if we do not take action. As the President requested, we are not taking this matter lightly, no matter who is behind these acts,” he stated. He urged officials in charge of inspections and investigations to proceed without hesitation, assuring them of government protection. “Do not be afraid. You will be protected. Carry out the checks and make arrests if necessary,” he added.

This incident follows a visit to Ivato by the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, who had called for an end to corruption on Tuesday. The Prime Minister highlighted the link between illegal mineral exports and corrupt practices, as well as the complicity these operations often require.

Mamitiana Rajaonarison learned of the arrest upon his arrival at Ivato, returning from Ambovombe where he had attended the inauguration of drinking water supply infrastructure. He issued direct instructions to dismantle the networks involved.

The Prime Minister also noted that investigations into recent gold trafficking cases are ongoing. Last September, five customs officers and an airport security agent were arrested on suspicion of complicity in an illicit gold export operation at Ivato.
