Poor Rôrô. The coach of the Barea is chasing the remainder of his salary from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Malagasy Football Federation (FMF). Both entities are passing the buck. The FMF has stated that the coach of the Barea, who were African vice-champions in 2023, resigned from his position as head coach of the A-team following a recent defeat against Tunisia. For the FMF, the matter is clear: Coach Rôrô did not complete his mission and therefore terminated the contract himself.
It remains unclear whether a formal contract was signed by all parties or if the agreement was purely verbal, as is often the case with local coaches. The payment of Coach Rôrô’s salary has always been problematic, sometimes relying on private companies to cover the costs.
This case exposes the poor treatment of national technicians across all sports disciplines. While athletes receive the spotlight, the essential role of technical staff is often overlooked, even during the distribution of bonuses.
Most of these technicians are volunteers driven by passion. This is an absurd situation, especially since the State operates a National Higher School of Sports to train specialists who are rarely utilized for national sports development. In many other countries, sports educators, coaches, and physical trainers are treated with the same professional status as doctors or teachers.
In the 1980s, a football development project led by Peter Schnittger aimed to give high-level coaches the same rank as civil servants, but the project failed. Today, despite changing political leadership at the Ministry, there is still no clear development policy involving these technicians. Coach Rôrô has learned this the hard way—a defeat far worse than any on the pitch.
