The health response is also taking to the skies. Faced with suspected cases of malaria and measles reported in several localities of the Ifanadiana district, notably in Ampasinambo, Fasintsara, and Ambinanisery, UNFPA Madagascar drones have been mobilized to accelerate the delivery of essential medicines and other health products. Eight flights have already been completed since Friday.
The operation aims to save precious time in areas where land transport can be time-consuming, particularly for the delivery of anti-malarial supplies. Vaccines and inputs for combating measles, polio, and tuberculosis are also among the items being transported.
According to a source at UNFPA Madagascar, the drones are based in Ranomafana. Products are first transported by the Phagedis (District Health Pharmacy) to the “drone port” before being flown to the affected localities. This system significantly reduces the time between ordering and delivery on the ground.
Typically, the UN agency’s drone system handles the transport of medicines and products related to family planning and reproductive health. In emergency situations, it can also be mobilized to meet needs expressed by the Ministry of Public Health, particularly for the transport of vaccines, mosquito nets, and other health supplies.
In Ifanadiana, this logistical capacity complements the response measures already underway on the ground. Medical teams are continuing investigations and patient care, while results from samples sent to the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar are pending.
Drones thus serve as an additional means to quickly bring health products to remote communities, in a context where rapid intervention is essential for patient care and the prevention of new cases.
