From October 15 to 17, the European Film Festival offers eight works, meetings with directors, and a masterclass to promote cinematic discovery and dialogue between cultures.
Eight films to discover new perspectives on the world. The European Film Festival returns to Antananarivo from October 15 to 17 with a program highlighting the diversity of European cinema and international collaborations. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Madagascar, in partnership with the Institut Français de Madagascar (IFM), the Goethe-Zentrum Antananarivo (CGM), the Embassy of Spain in Pretoria, the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Madagascar, and Cinepax, the event will take place at Cinepax and the IFM. All screenings will be free, subject to availability.
Eight films are on the bill: “Sirat”, “Mandrakizay Doria”, “Disco Afrika”, “La Vie en large”, “Fjord”, “Mr Nobody Against Putin”, “Peacock”, and “A Boat in the Garden”. The selection brings together different cinematic sensibilities and includes co-productions associating European professionals with filmmakers from other backgrounds. It is based on a catalog of around a hundred films that have benefited from European Union funding.
This year, the programming has been tightened while preserving the diversity of the works, notably including animated films aimed at different audiences.
The festival opens this Thursday at Cinepax with “Sirat”, by director Olivier Laxe, who is expected in Antananarivo for the occasion. The filmmaker will also lead a masterclass on the same day at 2 p.m. in the IFM conference room. Access will be by registration, subject to availability.
Malagasy cinema will also occupy an important place in the program with “Disco Afrika”, by Luck Razanajaona. The director will be present alongside his producer, Herizo Rabary, to present the film and meet the public. A screening is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 11:15 a.m. It will highlight Malagasy cinematic creation within this event dedicated to the diversity of artistic expressions.
Another Malagasy work on the bill, “Mandrakizay Doria”, by Franco Clerc, will be the subject of two screenings, on Friday and Saturday. The closing session at the IFM will be followed by an exchange with the director. Spectators will thus be able to deepen their discovery of the film and dialogue with its author. Through these screenings and meetings, the festival intends to bring filmmakers closer to the public and help them discover works from different horizons.
Launched in 2018, the European Film Festival is a major event for the cultural diplomacy of the European Union. Organized in collaboration with numerous delegations around the world, it aims to make cinema a tool for understanding, learning, and dialogue between cultures.
