Three days after the fire that devastated the Bazary Kely in Toamasina, the focus has shifted to reconstruction. Despite the extent of the damage, the affected merchants have begun to gradually rebuild their kiosks with the goal of resuming their activities as quickly as possible.
To support them, the State has mobilized emergency aid for reconstruction. A government delegation visited the site and provided the merchants with 7,240 corrugated iron sheets, 100 bags of cement, 16,912 pieces of wood, and 2.4 tons of nails to restore the kiosks.
Food and health assistance was also distributed to the affected families. This includes 82 tons of food supplies, such as rice, oil, and legumes, as well as Nutrilait flour, Sur’Eau water purification tablets, hydroalcoholic gel, soap, buckets, and jerrycans.
Further aid from Antananarivo is expected. Its distribution is being coordinated by the committee overseeing the reconstruction of Toamasina, led by General Heritiana Ramasy.
The Bazary Kely market in Toamasina was hit by a violent fire on Sunday night into Monday. Authorities report that 1,471 kiosks were destroyed in Bazary Kely Ambany and 945 in Bazary Kely Ambony. Second-hand clothing, vegetable, and furniture businesses were among the most affected.
There are currently no plans to relocate the merchants. However, the Urban Commune of Toamasina has announced the strengthening of fire prevention and control measures to reduce the risk of future disasters.
