EVENT – The government plans a commemoration of the 2025 protests

One year after the protests that led to the fall of the Andry Rajoelina regime, the government plans to commemorate this episode. On Wednesday, the National Palace of Culture and Sports hosted a consultation bringing together public authorities and youth representatives to define the main outlines for organizing this memorial event.

Chaired by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Alain Désiré Rasambany, the meeting brought together a wide range of civil society actors and institutional representatives. To ensure fair and inclusive representation, participants proposed the establishment of a joint organizing committee. This committee will bring together representatives of youth and student movements, the teaching staff, the artistic world, as well as association delegates and representatives from the six provinces of Madagascar.

The commemoration is scheduled from September 18 to 25. The program will focus on collective initiatives pursuing a triple objective: to honor the memory of the actions taken by young people in 2025, to draw lessons from this period for current governance, and to identify a sustainable future perspective for the new Malagasy generations.

As a reminder, the popular protest led notably by the youth and the “Gen Z” movement broke out in September 2025, against a backdrop of exasperation over massive power outages, water shortages, and governance issues. The movement eventually led to the overthrow of the regime at the time.

Through this week of commemoration, the organizers also wish to highlight the aspirations expressed during this mobilization, particularly regarding transparent governance, social justice, and the improvement of living conditions for the new generations.
