ATHLETICS – The Federation launches the race for the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games (JIOI)

The Madagascar Athletics Championships will mark a turning point in the preparation for the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games (JIOI). Organized in two phases, the competition will first bring together the U16, U18, and U20 categories from July 31 to August 2, followed by the senior events scheduled from August 7 to 9. Beyond the national titles coveted by each athlete, the primary objective is to identify those capable of representing Madagascar at the 2027 JIOI in Comoros.

Each league will be allowed to enter up to three athletes per event in the youth categories, with a maximum of two individual events and one relay per competitor. For seniors, five athletes per league will be authorized in each discipline. Combined events, ranging from the U16 quadriathlon to the senior decathlon, will be held entirely during the second phase.

For the national technical director of the Malagasy Athletics Federation, Tsiry Manantena Rakotomalala, these championships are primarily a detection stage. “The best athletes from the senior championships will join a pre-selection list for an initial JIOI training camp starting in December. We plan to hold three athlete training camps before the start of the 2027 JIOI,” he explains.

The Malagasy Athletics Federation aims to gradually build a competitive team for the 2027 JIOI in Comoros. This national competition will allow for the identification of high-potential talent and the launch of long-term preparation to approach the regional event with high ambitions.
