ANDRANORO ANTEHIROKA – Food poisoning leads to 67 hospitalizations

Waves of food poisoning continue. Andranoro, in Antehiroka, is the latest hotspot.

A new health alert has been issued in Antananarivo. The capital’s hospitals are once again overwhelmed by a wave of food poisoning. Yesterday, sixty-seven residents of Andranoro, in the commune of Antehiroka, Ambohidratrimo district, were rushed to University Hospital Centers (CHU). According to information provided by a source from the Ministry of Public Health yesterday evening, the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona (JRA) CHU admitted 34 patients, while the Anosiala CHU treated the remaining 33 victims. Two victims are reported to be in serious condition, and two pregnant women are among those affected.

Initial hypotheses suggest that the use of “poor quality” bulk palm oil is the cause of the poisoning. “Several victims had consumed ‘composé’ (a local mixed dish) from a local vendor where they usually shop. Having run out of her regular frying oil, the vendor had to switch to another product. Suspicions are directed at this new oil, as the poisoning affected more than just those who ate the dish at this specific stall,” our source explained. The vendor herself and one of her children are among those hospitalized.

The rural commune of Antehiroka states that the exact cause of the poisoning remains uncertain, with both cooking oil and eggs being investigated as potential sources. “Anyone experiencing headaches, dizziness, stomach pain, or unusual symptoms, especially if they have consumed or used cooking oil, is advised to urgently consult a doctor or go to the nearest hospital,” the local authority warned residents.

Victims arrived at hospitals in small groups throughout the day. By late yesterday afternoon, the count stood at 61, rising to 67 by the evening. Some patients were initially taken to the Joseph Raseta Befelatànana CHU before being transferred to the JRA CHU. The condition of several patients is reportedly improving. High-ranking officials, including the Minister of Public Health and the Minister of Trade and Consumption, have visited the patients. The State is covering all medical expenses and care for the victims.

The Ministry of Trade and Consumption has ordered the temporary closure of the business that sold the suspicious oil. Samples of the oil and food remains—notably minced meat and snout salad—were seized from the implicated stall, as well as from a fritter (menakely) vendor identified by the victims. The food preparation premises were also inspected. Initial findings by technicians indicate that the oil used had not exceeded its expiration date. The administrative and medical investigation is ongoing. Laboratory analysis results will help determine the exact origin of the incident.
