The first anniversary of the September 25, 2025, commemoration took place yesterday. The ceremony in Anosy confirmed the significance the current administration intends to assign to this date in the nation’s political memory.
As announced, the stage was set in Anosy, opposite the roundabout leading to the Ambohidahy tunnel, where a stele stands in memory of the events of September and October 2025 and their victims. Colonel Randrianirina, the Head of State, who was attending the United Nations General Assembly, could not arrive in time for the ceremony, so no formal speech was delivered. Instead, the event featured poetry, slams, and songs with committed lyrics.
The four High Councilors of the Refoundation, government members, and key political and military figures who emerged during the protests were present. The symbolic highlight was the unveiling of the commemorative stele. While the event served as a tribute to the victims, it also underscored the administration’s desire to cement September 25th as a cornerstone of the country’s political history.
Upon returning from New York late yesterday afternoon, Colonel Randrianirina immediately went to Anosy to lay a wreath. He stated, “This ceremony reminds us that people fought for change and that there were victims. It reminds us leaders, myself first, that it is those who struggled who brought us to power.”
However, the event received a mixed reception from observers. Far from a moment of national unity, the ceremony felt exclusive to those claiming ownership of the 2025 movement, with the focus on political divisions rather than shared values. The President warned his collaborators that participating in the struggle is not a “get-out-of-jail-free card” for corruption or bad governance, emphasizing that if old practices persist, nothing will truly change.
