DIPLOMACY – Colonel Michaël Randrianirina joins Marshal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno for Chad’s 66th Independence Anniversary

Three heads of state stood on the podium at the Place de la Nation in N’Djamena. To celebrate the 66th anniversary of his country’s independence, the President of the Republic of Chad, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, invited two of his counterparts: Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, President of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar, and General Horta Inta-A, President of the Transition of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. For the occasion, all three men wore their parade uniforms. The military parade that marked the ceremony took place under high security.

Like many countries colonized by France, Chad gained independence in 1960. While Madagascar was proclaimed an independent country on June 26, 1960, Chad, which had been included in French Equatorial Africa since 1910, officially gained independence on August 11, 1960. In fact, it was in August that nine of the 14 countries colonized by France that gained independence that year regained their sovereignty. As was the case in other countries, this was preceded by an agreement with France to define the terms of access to independence.
