Driving training offers are proliferating on social media, much to the dismay of the driving school union, which deems them irregular. “Even if you own a vehicle, no one can teach driving privately for remuneration: going through a driving school is mandatory. This is not about defending our interests, but about protecting lives,” insisted Christian Manitra, vice-president of the Madagascar Driving School Union, on Saturday.
Establishing a legitimate driving school requires numerous procedures. “Only vehicles designated for this use, which have passed technical inspection and are equipped with dual pedals, can be used for training. The training must be provided by an instructor holding a teaching authorization and a professional driving instructor card. Furthermore, the establishment must have premises that comply with the dimensions required by the State to obtain its opening authorization,” explains Lalanirina Andriambolololona, president of the Antananarivo Driving School Union.
According to professionals, these improvised instructors have neither training nor authorization to teach. They remind the public that learning to drive is not done in two or three days: theoretical and practical training requires at least one month before being able to take the exam. In their view, such rudimentary training could make students a danger to other road users.
