The death toll from the accident in the Ambohidahy tunnel has risen. A new victim has succumbed to her injuries, while the taxi-brousse driver remains in pre-trial detention.
32-year-old Patricia Razafinirina has passed away, becoming the sixth victim of the tragic traffic accident. A mother, she leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, September 9, 2026, around 2:30 PM. A line 186 taxi-brousse, traveling from Analakely toward Anosy, suddenly veered off course in the tunnel, mounted the sidewalk, and struck nine pedestrians. Initial reports indicated two deaths, including 30-year-old rescuer Jean Jacques Ravaojanahary. The toll subsequently rose to four, then five, and now six with the passing of Patricia.
According to her family, Patricia was returning home to 67 Ha from her workplace in Analakely when she was struck. Despite medical efforts at the HJRA hospital, she succumbed to her severe injuries.
The driver, identified as Charles, is currently held in pre-trial detention at Antanimora. The case is scheduled for trial on October 13. He faces charges of involuntary manslaughter. While the driver claims a bicycle cut him off or that there were visibility issues, initial technical inspections suggest the vehicle’s braking system was functioning correctly.
