The Malagasy men’s and women’s U23 national teams secured second place in the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League 2026 Africa South conference. Following the six stops of the tournament, which concluded on Sunday in Gaborone, Botswana, both teams finished behind Egypt, who qualified for the world finals scheduled for September in Wuhan, China.
In the sixth and final stop, the Ankoay women’s team lost 16-14 to Egypt in the final, having previously won stops 4 and 5. The men’s team concluded the competition with a 20-16 victory over Egypt in the final of stop 6, after having also won stop 5.
In the overall conference standings, based on points accumulated across the six stops, both Malagasy teams finished as runners-up to Egypt. The cumulative points determine the conference winner, which is the only team to qualify for the FIBA 3×3 U23 Nations League world finals.
In the women’s category, Madagascar finished with 510 points, trailing Egypt (550 points) and ahead of Algeria (390), Angola (380), and Botswana (330). In the men’s category, Madagascar finished with 480 points, compared to Egypt’s 530. Algeria took third place with 460 points, followed by Botswana (350) and Algeria (340).
The Africa South conference brought together U23 teams from Madagascar, Angola, and Botswana, as well as U21 teams from Algeria and Egypt. Held from July 20 to 26 in Gaborone, the competition serves as a major event for the development of 3×3 basketball, providing young players with high-level international experience.
Despite missing out on qualification for the world finals, both Malagasy teams confirmed their progress on the continental stage by finishing among the top nations, having each won two stops and reached multiple finals throughout the week.
