Two men were arrested in Ambanitsena, in the Manjakandriana district, after attempting to rape a 21-year-old woman. The incident occurred on Monday around 6:40 PM, when a distress call alerted the gendarmes.
The victim, who had just gotten off a bus and was walking home alone to Ambohibehasina, was followed before being attacked by two intoxicated individuals. They pinned her to the ground and gagged her to prevent her from screaming.
A passing motorcyclist spotted the scene in the light of his headlights and immediately raised the alarm. Local residents mobilized and managed to catch one of the suspects in a rice field. The other was arrested shortly after at his home, surprised to learn that his alleged accomplice had already been captured.
During their interrogation, the two men admitted they intended to assault the young woman and specified that they had not attempted to rob her.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Carion gendarmerie. Both young men have been taken into police custody and will be presented to the public prosecutor.
