CULTURAL EDUCATION – African Poetry Quiz rewards three young Malagasy talents

The National Library of Anosy hosted the award ceremony for the Jacques Rabemananjara – Martial Sinda African Poetry Quiz in Madagascar yesterday. Created by poet and teacher Thierry Sinda, in collaboration with Moa Abaïd, this competition aims to introduce African literature to young people, promote reading, and enhance the continent’s literary heritage. For this 23rd edition, the National Library partnered with the organizers for the first time.

Conducted in French, the contest focused on Négritude, major African poets, and the first Malagasy poet. Miangola Ony Rabarinarivo won the first prize of 250,000 ariary, while Tsarovana Liantso Mampionona and Tiana Andrianina Randrianatoandro each received a certificate of merit and 100,000 ariary. A literature student, Miangola Ony explained that she discovered the contest on the National Library’s Facebook page: “I was happy because it was an opportunity to put into practice what I had learned as a literature student at the university.”

The competition pays tribute to poets Jacques Rabemananjara and Martial Sinda, two major figures of the Négritude movement. Held on the first anniversary of Martial Sinda’s passing, the ceremony honored his literary legacy while highlighting the talent and interest of young Malagasy people in African literature.
