COLONEL RANDRIANIRINA – “We remain heavily dependent”

In a speech to the nation on the occasion of the national holiday, the Head of State presented a blunt assessment of the country’s situation. Madagascar remains heavily dependent on the outside world, he admitted.

The fight continues. In essence, this was the watchword of Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, the Head of State, in his address to the nation yesterday for the national holiday. “The fight for Independence, led by the heroes of our Nation, continues today,” he declared.

The senior officer sounded the clarion call for “a collective effort, unity, sincere solidarity, and above all, a true love for the fatherland.” These are imperatives, according to him, given the state of dependency in which Madagascar remains mired. With a clear-sighted tone, the occupant of Iavoloha admitted that “we remain heavily dependent, both politically and economically.” A situation that leads the country to “simply endure the effects of globalization,” he added.

“If we consider the past 66 years, many observations must be made. We have not yet reached food self-sufficiency. The energy we need still depends on foreign sources. The medicines and medical equipment necessary to treat our population are also imported. Likewise, public policies and social projects in our country are, for the most part, funded by foreign partners,” the Head of State observed.

Sacred Union: On the occasion of the national holiday, Colonel Randrianirina asked everyone to go beyond the mere aspect of celebration. He called on citizens to engage in an introspection exercise regarding what they can do to lift the country out of the stagnation in which it is bogged down.

“This is the time for each of us to conduct a deep reflection on patriotism and the contribution that is incumbent upon us. It is precisely in this process of refoundation that we must demonstrate it,” he asserted.

Faced with this independence, which he considers unfinished, the Head of State argued: “we need a paradigm shift.” The idea is clearly to break with this model of multidimensional dependency. According to him, the sacred union of the entire nation will be the lever to achieve this. To this end, Colonel Randrianirina reiterated that “the enemy we must fight together is poverty.”
