SHOW – Joely transforms daily realities into over three hours of laughter with “Marina Mafy”

Laughter, but also facing reality. For over three hours, Joely performed a series of sketches to a packed house with “Marina Mafy” on Sunday at the Palais des Sports in Mahamasina. Covering family, parenting, violence, mental health, social conditions, education, sexuality, aging, religion, and even fairy tales, the comedian tackled taboo or uncomfortable subjects by turning them into comedic material.

After an opening act featuring four other comedians, the show began with a rendition of “We Are the World” performed by several of his signature characters: Joely Kely, Narindra, Seheno, Rondro, Diamondra, Mme Edwige, and Mamie Julienne. The comedian also paid tribute to Malagasy humor pioneers such as Fou Hehy, Gottlieb, Francis, and Zafihita, acknowledging that making people laugh is a serious craft.

Throughout the show, Joely demonstrated a precise understanding of the realities his audience faces. Scenes involving children, parenting, and recognizable daily objects—such as new shoes needing repairs before being worn, BN biscuits, or the M-notebook—resonated deeply with the crowd. Behind the laughter, Joely addressed serious issues like domestic violence, mental health, social inequality, and screen addiction, stating that these realities “must be discussed to be understood and eventually changed.”

The show was characterized by high levels of audience interaction, with Joely improvising based on spectator reactions. This spontaneity, combined with six months of meticulous preparation, resulted in a seamless performance. Joely concluded the show by bringing his characters back on stage, ending with a heartfelt message: “Tiako ianareo marina mafy” (I love you very much).
