Thirty years after the debut of Feo Gasy, Erick Manana continues to keep the group’s identity alive on stage. On Saturday, at the Ivato International Conference Center (CCI), the artist reunited with his companions to kick off the celebration of the band’s 30th anniversary. With a deliberately sober staging, featuring a screen displaying images of deceased members in the background, the concert highlighted the continuity of a musical journey that began three decades ago.
The venue was not entirely full: the front rows were occupied, while the back rows were less so. On stage, the guitar, korintsana, and valiha accompanied the artists who took turns throughout the show. Rado, the son of Fafah, notably took his father’s place, thus extending his presence in the Feo Gasy universe. Voara, who was visiting, was also invited on stage to perform “Aza ilaozanao”.
The repertoire brought back several iconic tracks, including “Ikala Manja”, “Alahelo”, “Ry Iarivo tsy foiko”, and “Any indray andro”. The members followed one another on stage, giving the concert both a collective and memorial dimension.
This 30th-anniversary celebration is also a tribute to the departed companions. Images of Fafah, Rakoto, Bariliva, and Sata accompanied the show on the screen placed behind the artists. For Erick Manana, these reunions with Feo Gasy are inseparable from the memory of those who marked his journey.
The group’s history began in Bordeaux, where its members met on stage and quickly discovered a spiritual closeness. Erick Manana, then the youngest, says he learned a lot from his elders. “The whole history of Feo Gasy could fill an entire book. It is a true school,” he emphasizes.
His journey with the group is also marked by encounters. “The first person I called for Feo Gasy was Pasy. Since he could not participate in the tour in the end, I called Bariliva,” he recounts.
After three years dedicated to festivals, Feo Gasy now intends to regain its place on international stages. Erick Manana explains: “I prefer that we start here, in our country,” before a European tour scheduled for September and a return to the festival circuit. The goal is clearly stated: “Our duty, as Feo Gasy, is to make Malagasy music shine throughout the world.”
