NATURAL DISASTER RISKS – Boeny and Sofia strengthen their defenses

Officials from the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) and Madagascar Meteorology continue their efforts in prevention and preparedness for natural disasters. Following Farafangana, Mahajanga hosted a workshop dedicated to strengthening alert systems at the Les Roches Rouges restaurant on the Corniche last Wednesday.

“This initiative is part of the preparation and anticipation efforts aimed at reducing the impacts of disasters, in a context of climate variability and risks linked to El Niño. The discussions aim to define the procedures allowing each stakeholder to make appropriate decisions and act in the face of alerts and disaster situations,” stated the Deputy Director General of the BNGRC, John Heriniandry Razafimanbimby.

The Boeny and Sofia regions, which are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards, were at the center of this workshop. The discussions focused on the main risks to which Boeny is exposed, their potential impacts, and the alert thresholds to be adopted. Available data on population vulnerability were also examined. The tangible goal was to improve the dissemination of alerts to local communities.

Special attention was given to the inclusion of people with disabilities, who participated in the work so that their needs could be taken into account in the alert mechanisms.

“We are aware of and grateful for your mobilization around this issue, which directly concerns the safety of the local population,” said the representative of the Boeny region, the Director of General Affairs.

Every year, the Boeny region faces several climatic hazards, including floods, cyclones, strong winds, heatwaves, and drought. The latter is already being felt in Mahajanga, where intense heat has persisted since September. The rains are still awaited, even though they should normally have begun to fall by this time to promote the ripening of the first mangoes.
