Malagasy materials are shifting in form and taking on a new dimension. For its second edition, Malagasy Design Gaze, the first design fair organized in Madagascar dedicated to local object and graphic design, will bring together eleven designers, artists, and artisans at the Gare Soarano, via the Orange Digital Center, from September 19 to October 2. Curated by Ihoby Lysiane Rabarijohn, this edition is themed “Re Dessin – Re Dessein” (Redesigning – Redesigning Purpose), aiming to showcase Madagascar’s resources and expertise in a new light.
This second edition focuses on transformation and experimentation. Stone, earth, minerals, architecture, graphic design, and recycling will be explored through various techniques.
“We are going to showcase the richness of our island’s expertise through minerals, earth, architecture, and transformation,” explains curator Ihoby Lysiane Rabarijohn. For her, the work involves “creating a link, a thread, between the material and the know-how.” The diversity of practices allows for a dialogue between artisans and designers, proposing new ways to work with local materials. “There will be a lot of transformation; this singularity aims to draw our gaze toward new perspectives,” she emphasizes.
Among the selected creators is Vero Rasendratsirofo, a specialist in art ceramics and the 1988 Best Artisan of Madagascar. Inspired by mineral and plant imprints, forests, and deserts, she seeks to make her creations “tell the story of the earth and the blossoming of life.”
Stéphanie Razafindrabe of Granit’IX works with stone and contemporary design. Her approach aims to enhance artisanal skills while developing a contemporary style inspired by Madagascar. Architect and creator Georges Floret also explores stone with a desire to experiment and create new forms. Meanwhile, artist and designer Miangaly Elia, who comes from an architectural background, brings a contemporary approach to her work, having notably been recognized as a revelation at Antson’ny tontolo.
