Tsinjohasina Rabeharisoa, known as ‘Tesy’, the president of the Malagasy Billiards Union (UBM), shares the history and priorities of the association, which was established last year.
Regarding the creation of the national association, Rabeharisoa explains that the UBM was founded on August 2, 2025, following an elective general assembly. Inspired by the professionalism of international federations observed at the World Championships in Malta, he decided to take the initiative to promote the discipline in Madagascar. Currently, the island has 78 licensed players across 14 clubs.
The primary objectives include expanding the number of clubs and licensed players, particularly in the regions, and encouraging participation in the national championship. On the international front, the union is already preparing for the 2027 African Championship organized by the International Billiards Federation (IBF), while seeking support to ensure the success of these projects.
Reflecting on the first year, the UBM launched the 2025-2026 national championship on November 7, consisting of twelve stages. This initiative aims to integrate players into a legal framework and serves as a selection process for international competitions, such as the IBF World Championships in Cape Town.
Regarding equipment, Rabeharisoa notes that a cue costs between 150,000 and 4 million ariary, while a table ranges from 6 million to 25 million ariary for high-quality local products. Hourly rental rates for a table vary between 5,000 and 15,000 ariary.
