ITASY – Electric poles under close guard

In response to the surge in electric cable thefts in the Itasy region, surveillance of Jirama infrastructure has been reinforced to curb power outages.

Theft of electric cables is on the rise in the Itasy region, causing power cuts in several localities. Faced with this resurgence, authorities have reacted quickly by strengthening the surveillance of Jirama poles, with the goal of permanently eradicating the phenomenon.

Community vigilance committees have been established to support the gendarmerie in protecting public property. At the same time, awareness campaigns are being conducted among residents in the affected areas.

According to information gathered, acts of banditry, attacks, roadblocks, and kidnappings are on the decline in Itasy. However, criminals, in search of new methods, have turned to cable theft.

A meeting led by the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons was held in Arivonimamo, attended by all administrative officials, to identify sustainable solutions. The authorities also reiterated several rules: no individual is authorized to transport coiled cables unless they are an employee of the company, identifiable by their uniform and carrying the required official documents. Similarly, no one may intervene on poles or cables, climb them, or touch them without wearing the regulatory attire and without informing the local residents.

Finally, the population is strongly encouraged to communicate any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of these thefts.
