The Malagasy tradition was reflected in the details of their attire. Both the President and the First Lady opted for outfits with strong Malagasy inspiration, revisited with a modern aesthetic. This approach served to promote their clothing heritage while adapting it to the requirements of modern protocol.
For the President, the silhouettes were inspired by high-ranking Malagasy dignitaries, featuring a long tunic similar to the ‘malabary’, with tailored cuts and light tones. White, or ‘fotsy’, holds a special place, associated with peace and purity. The ‘lamba’, carefully draped over the shoulder, remains an inseparable element of this attire, often crafted from wild silk, or ‘landibe’, for major occasions.
The First Lady favored long flared dresses or structured ensembles made from traditional textiles, such as the revisited ‘lambahoana’ or precious silk weaves. Hand-embroidered floral or geometric patterns highlighted the craftsmanship of Malagasy artisans.
These outfits were crafted by ‘Sih Rakout’, a brand founded by self-taught designer Sitraka Rakotoasimbola. Her work bridges tradition and modernity, drawing from Madagascar’s cultural richness, particularly the Antandroy people. This movement is supported by other designers like Marie Laure Jaomatana and the luxury brand BoGasy Madagascar, who aim to promote Malagasy fashion internationally while educating the public on the true foundations of traditional attire.
