CINEMA – Four Malagasy filmmakers compete at Ant’Sary Doc Mada

Four Malagasy filmmakers are participating in the fourth edition of the Ant’Sary Doc Mada International Documentary Festival, which combines competition, training, and author support, held from September 25 to October 3 in Antananarivo.

Malagasy documentary filmmaking will be well-represented at this year’s event. Hasina Fitahianjanahary Josoa Emmanuel, Julienne Norohasimbola, Gilde Razafitsihadinoina, and Ramilimiaramamonjy Heritina Tsilavina are among the participants in an international selection featuring seventeen works from ten countries and territories.

The competition includes ten short documentaries, six feature films, and one digital experience. Works are evaluated based on their storytelling, production quality, artistic merit, and subject relevance. The jury includes Kadhaffi Mbuyamba, and several awards will be presented, including best long and short films, best cinematography, best sound, and a public choice award.

This edition also marks a first for Madagascar by hosting the DOC OI writing residency at the Institut français de Madagascar (IFM) from September 28 to October 2. For one week, ten authors will have the opportunity to develop their documentary projects under the guidance of professionals.

Anatole Ramaroson, director of Ant’Sary Doc Mada, stated that the residency aims to bridge the gap between film distribution and the support of authors who will shape the future of documentary filmmaking, while strengthening ties between Madagascar and the Indian Ocean region.

The festival also features workshops and masterclasses on documentary writing and industry relations, as well as a roundtable discussion on the structure of the film industry in Madagascar. Screenings begin on September 25, with various events planned at the CRAAM and Bemasoandro Itaosy.

Since its inception, Ant’Sary Doc Mada has grown significantly in organization and audience reach. Despite limited external financial support—relying mostly on the organizers’ own funds with minor assistance from the IFM—the team remains committed to sustaining this vital cultural event.
