HUMAN RIGHTS – The Nifin’Akanga movement uses art to raise awareness of women’s rights and prevent gender-based violence

Music, theater, slam poetry, and dance will serve as tools to raise awareness about women’s rights and the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) in several cities across Madagascar. Through a national tour, the Nifin’Akanga movement intends to use art to foster dialogue with communities regarding gender equality, human rights, and civic participation.

Presented as the first major artivism experiment in Madagascar, this tour began in Antalaha last May. It will continue in Antsiranana, Toamasina, Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga, Toliara, Taolagnaro, and Antananarivo until the beginning of next year.

According to a statement from Nifin’Akanga, the project brings together artists, youth, and communities through artistic activities designed to open dialogue on societal issues. Ahead of the tour, musicians, slam poets, actors, and dancers participated in an artistic residency where they created works inspired by their experiences and their commitment to advocacy.

The creations will be presented during public performances in each of the host cities. These events will be accompanied by discussion forums with residents on women’s rights, gender equality, and the prevention of gender-based violence.

The project also includes awareness-raising actions in schools. Inter-high school competitions will invite students to create artistic works centered on equality, human rights, and the fight against violence against women and girls.

For Mbolatiana Raveloarimisa, co-founder of Nifin’Akanga, art is a means to create a dialogue with communities and address topics that are sometimes difficult to express with words alone. “Art sometimes allows us to express what words alone cannot say. It creates a bond with communities and opens a space for exchange,” she emphasizes.

Through this initiative, the movement aims to demonstrate that art can contribute to social transformation by offering citizens, especially young people, a space for expression and engagement.
