The Green Party, Hasin’i Madagasikara, is advocating for the swiftest possible return to constitutional order through the rapid organization of elections. In a statement released on Wednesday, the party proposed a schedule for combined elections: communal and regional elections in October 2027, followed by presidential and legislative elections in November 2027. Prior to this, they suggest holding a constitutional referendum in July 2027.
Led by Alexandre Georget, former President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of Antananarivo, the party argues that combining elections will save both time and money while fostering political pluralism. This proposal is intended as a contribution to the ongoing political consultations on electoral governance led by Colonel Michaël Randrianirina.
The Greens firmly oppose any extension of the current state of exception, insisting that transparent, inclusive, and widely accepted elections are the only way out of the crisis. This stance contrasts with other political entities, such as the Hery Vaovao ho an’i Madagasikara (HVM), whose president, Rivo Rakotovao, suggested that institutional and legal reforms are necessary before proceeding to elections, even if it means extending the transition period.
The Green Party emphasizes that the success of elections depends on the trust of voters and candidates in the organizing body. However, the proposed timeline faces significant political and technical hurdles, particularly regarding the drafting of a new Constitution based on the FFKM-led national dialogue, which is not expected until after May 2027, as well as the logistical challenges of holding multiple elections in a short timeframe.
